What is a Break-even Point?
The break-even point is where total revenue equals total costs — you're neither making nor losing money. In trading, break-even means your wins exactly cover your losses plus all fees.
In Trading Context
Your break-even win rate depends on your risk:reward ratio. For 1:1 R:R, you need 50% win rate. For 1:2 R:R, you only need 33.3% win rate to break even.
Break-even Win Rate Formula
Break-even Win Rate = 1 / (1 + Reward/Risk)
Frequently Asked Questions
Break-even in trading means your total profits equal total losses plus all costs (spread, commission, swap). You need to win more than this to be profitable.
Better R:R means you can break even with a lower win rate. 1:3 R:R only requires 25% win rate to break even — giving you much more room for error.
It depends on your R:R ratio. A 40% win rate with 1:2 R:R is more profitable than a 60% win rate with 1:0.5 R:R. Always consider both together.
